DIY SOS Transforms Raffi’s Home with Centrobed’s Caribbean Turning Bed
When eight-year-old Raffi from Bracknell contracted E. coli, his life changed completely. The illness left him with brain damage and reliant on a wheelchair. Unable to return home from hospital because his house was not suitable, the BBC DIY SOS team stepped in to completely transform the family’s home — creating a safe, accessible, and inspiring space to support his recovery.
How Centrobed Helped
As part of this life-changing project, Centrobed proudly donated a Caribbean Turning Bed, one of our specialist care beds designed to enhance mobility, comfort, and independence.
The Caribbean Turning Bed is an innovative solution that automatically assists with repositioning, helping people with limited mobility to move safely and rest comfortably. This reduces the need for manual handling, supporting both the individual and their carers.
The Benefits of the Caribbean Turning Bed for Raffi
The Caribbean Turning Bed has made a significant difference to Raffi’s comfort, recovery, and independence. Its key benefits include:
Promotes independence: The automatic turning system enables safe movement with minimal assistance.
Reduces carer strain: The bed’s powered turning and profiling functions ease physical lifting for parents and carers.
Supports rehabilitation: Regular, gentle movement helps improve circulation and reduce the risk of pressure sores.
Encourages confidence and comfort: A stable and supportive sleeping environment aids both physical recovery and emotional wellbeing.
A Heart-Warming Transformation
Raffi’s father, Dean, expressed his gratitude to the DIY SOS team and all who contributed:
> “It’s been absolutely beautiful to see the transition and Raffi is enjoying it as much as we thought he would.
He’s now taking steps, remembering things, talking — all because of the spaces they’ve made here.”
DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles described the transformation as a “huge undertaking” involving over 600 volunteers and tradespeople. He said the changes to Raffi’s home — and the introduction of equipment like the Caribbean Turning Bed — have helped to create an environment where Raffi can continue to thrive.
